VfL Wolfsburg vs Hertha BSC / Bundesliga – This is in fact the true derby of the third round as both teams won in previous two rounds and share the first place with Bayern. The difference is that was not expected from Wolfsburg and Hertha, especially after very modest results made in the previous season. It was expected that Wolfsburg plays better thanks to its individual quality, while Hertha has definitely made a pleasant surprise. Both their head-to-head played last season had ended as draws.
VfL Wolfsburg vs Hertha BSC begins 15.09.2018 at 15:30 CET
Unlike two previous seasons Wolfsburg has started this one in way that promise avoidance of stress and bitter survival struggle in final days of the season. They haven’t exactly excelled in the Cup although they won Elversberg by 1-0 but it all looked much better in first two league rounds. Wolfsburg won and those were not victories over outsiders but teams with ambition to reach the Champions League. The first victim was Schalke 04, runner-up from the previous season, although Wolfsburg was a bit lucky to win.
They had a lead and then received the equaliser when they had one player more on the pitch. Luckily for them Ginczek, who arrived this summer, had scored the winning goal in the injury time. The success has increased their self-confidence and they won difficult away match in Leverkusen by 3-1 despite being the first to receive a goal. They scored five goals and all were scored by different players. Goalkeeper Casteels didn’t play in Leverkusen but is back now, while Guilavogui stays out of the pitch.
Probable lineups VfL Wolfsburg: Casteels – William, Knoche, Brooks, Roussillon – Camacho – Gerhardt, Arnold – Steffen, Brekalo – Weghorst
Hertha too started with problems in the German Cup where it defeated Braunschweig 2-1 in the first round. The opponent wasn’t exactly easy but it isn’t expected from Hertha to plays at top level this season, given quality of its players. For the time being, Hertha escapes the prediction as it started the season with two wins and no received goals, in fact Hertha is the only team in the Bundesliga who hasn’t received a goal. Victory over Nurnberg 1-0 in Berlin in the first round was fully expected, although the hero of the match was goalie Jarstein who defended a penalty.
In the second round Hertha went to Gelsenkirchen and many didn’t give it much chance. Hertha indeed was mostly in subordinate position but they were the first to take lead after midfielder Dude scored early in the match. Member of the Czech national team scored his second in the injury time after his team repelled all Schalke’s attacks. Plattenhardt didn’t play in Gelsenkirchen but is back now, but injured stopper Rekik is out of action just like Mittelstadt.
Probable lineups Hertha BSC: Jarstein – Lazaro, Torunarigha, Stark, Plattenhardt – Grujic, Maier – Kalou, Duda, Dilrosun – Ibisevic
