Thiem vs Federer / ATP Indian Wells – Two finalists of the first Masters 1000 Series tournament this season are Austrian D. Thiem and Swiss R. Federer. N. Djokovic was expected to come from the upper half of draw but he was eliminated early one, while the bottom half justified expectations given that R. Nadal and R. Federer were placed in it.
Thiem vs Federer begins 17.03.2019 at 23:00 CET
Given how he played so far this season Thiem did surprisingly well at the Masters in Indian Wells. The Austrian was very aggressive and focused against each opponent and we can freely say that he fully deserved a place in the final. This is the third Masters final for Thiem. He played previous two in Madrid and lost both of them. He lost the first one to R. Nadal, and the second to A. Zverev.
To reach the final Thiem had to win very difficult and uncertain match with M. Raonic. The match lasted 2 ½ hours and Thiem won 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. How much the two player were close can be best seen through fact that no breaks were made in first two sets. The match didn’t end without break as Thiem managed to make one in the third set. The Canadian expectedly had more aces but overall statistic was on Thiem’s side.
Federer easily reached the final as he didn’t have to play against Nadal in the semi-finals. The Spaniard had again to retire and players didn’t even show on court. Of course, this makes life easier for Federer who preserved all his energy for the final. Federer played the last match at the tournament in the quarter-finals against Polish H. Hurkacz.
Federer routinely won the quarter-final match although the result doesn’t indicate such ease. The Swiss made by one break in each set and that was enough to reach the semi-finals. We will remind you that Federer is in fairly good shape and this is his second final in a row. Before the ATP Indian Wells Federer played in Dubai where he defeated Tsitsipas in the final.
Thiem vs Federer PICK
This is the fifth match between the two players. Each of them won by two previous head-to-head. They played the last one in London 2018 and Federer won 6-2, 6-3. Federer is again a favourite and we can rightly expect to win with smaller handicap in number of won games.
