That was the third final for the Tunisians in total; they lost in it to Ghana 1965 after extra time and South Africa 1996 by 0-2. They played in three semi-finals but they won the bronze only in 1962 when they won Uganda in match for the third place.
This time Tunisia reaches the semi-finals after three draws in the Group E and goal difference in the group phase 2-2. They again drew in the round of 16 with Ghana but they passed it after penalties. True, the Tunisians were better team than Ghana but they showed their true colours against the most pleasant surprise here, debutant Madagascar which they outclassed in the quarter-finals by 3-0 when scorers for Tunisia were Sassi, Msakni and Sliti.
