Pella is Argentinian who won his first ever ATP title this season; he won the tournament in Sao Paulo where he defeated C. Garin 7-5, 6-3 in the final. The title generated sufficient number of points to improve his best rating and in his case it would be the 32nd place in the ATP list. True, before ATP Monte Carlo his rating went down a bit and right now Pella occupies the 35th place.
As it is common for Argentinian players, Pell made his all best results this season on clay courts. He, besides the title in Sao Paulo, made several other noteworthy results where the first of them is the final of ATP Cordoba, which he lost to A. Londero after three sets. After Cordoba, Pella reached the semi-finals of tournament in Buenos Aires where he lost to his today’s opponent M. Cecchinato.
Cecchinato is probably the best Italian player at the moment. Reason of the statement is that he managed to climb at the 16th place in the ATP list this season, which is at the same time the best rating in his career. Although he has negative win/loss ratio before the tournament in Monte Carlo 6-7, Cecchinato has managed to win one title this season, which was the third in his career.
Cecchinato won the title at the tournament in Buenos Aires, where he defeated D. Schwartman in the final. Besides that he made one of better results this season in Doha, where he played in the semi-finals but lost to T. Berdych. We need to add that Cecchinato reached the third round of Masters in Miami when he lost to D. Griffin.
Pella vs Cecchinato PICK
The two players met twice at ATP tournaments so far and Cecchinato had an upper hand both times. Besides winning their head-to-head in Buenos Aires this season Cecchinato was better in Umag last season. All this indicate that the Italian is a favourite to win the match. If we add to this great support that Italian and French players enjoy from the stands than Cecchinato’s victory shouldn’t come into question.
