Nadal vs Thiem / ATP Roland Garros – We will watch R. Nadal and D. Thiem in the final of the Roland Garros for the second season in a row. Both of them played excellently throughout the whole tournament and fully deserve to be in the final. This is expected result for Nadal, while perhaps N. Djokovic was expected instead of Thiem. That hasn’t happened after a great and exhausting struggle the World’s no. 1 didn’t have enough strength to defeat the Austrian.
Nadal vs Thiem begins 09.06.2019 at 15:00 CET
Nadal, being the first favourite to win the tournament, didn’t allow Federer to surprise in the semi-final match. The Spaniard played at high level, just like the whole tournament, and Federer had no chance to seriously endanger the title defender. We got impression that the Swiss didn’t believe himself that he can do more against Nadal on this type of surface and he made several, for him, unusual mistakes.
Federer dropped all his chances in first two sets when the result was more equal. The most difficult moment for Nadal came in the second set when he allowed Federer to make a break but the Swiss didn’t have the advantage for long as Nadal effortlessly equalised the result and after that he took full control over the match. Statistically, Nadal fully dominated in the first service 82% vs 58%, and number of directly won points 33-25.
Thiem had to defeat World’s no. 1 N. Djokovic to reach the final. Perhaps the expression is a bit too strong if we take a look at the result but all who watched the match could see that Djokovic struggled in a larger part of the match and was forced to catch up with Thiem. We believe that weather negatively affected Nole and frequent postponing of his matches that started with the Masters in Rome.
However, that cannot be an excuse given that the same happened to Thiem but unlike Djokovic he stayed much calmer and didn’t allow anything to disturb his focus. Djokovic deserves congratulation for managing several times to equalise the result in this match but he should ask himself why he struggled to win his service games. The best indicator of this is fact that Thiem had even 22 break points out of which he used nine. Besides, the Austrian had far more winners 52-39 so he fully deservedly reached the final.
Nadal vs Thiem PICK
Nadal was far more successful in their previous head-to-head and he won eight such matches, while Thiem won four times. However, the Austrian won one of their matches this season in Barcelona. Accordingly, Thiem knows how to defeat Nadal on clay but the Roland Garros is a home ground for Nadal and he very rarely losses here. The Spaniard has a great advantage in this match and that is a one day off, unlike Thiem who had a very difficult match with Djokovic. This could be a great advantage for the Spaniard, which is why we believe that he will not lose more than one set.
