ATP Shanghai / Medvedev vs Tsitsipas – The first major surprise took place in the quarter-finals when S. Tsitispas eliminated the title defender N. Djokovic. The Greek faces D. Medvedev in the semi-finals who continues with good results and who defeated F. Fognini in the previous round.
Match Medvedev vs Tsitsipas begins 12.10.2019 at 06:00 CET
Quarter-final match between Medvedev and Fognini had developed mostly in line with our expectations. Medvedev has justified predictions but still it was a fairly uncertain match in which Fognini expectedly put up a solid resistance. Fact that only one break was made in the first set illustrates well the level of uncertainty, and it took place in the sixth game when Fognini failed to win a single point in his service game.
The second set was also uncertain as no break was made. The winner of the set, and it turned out later on the winner of the match, was decided after the tie-break. Fognini was the first to have advantage in mini-breaks in the 13th game but Medvedev managed to turn the result in his favour and he won without dropping a set. Besides the result we should mention that the complete statistic from the match was on Medvedev’s side.
Tsitsipas managed to win World’s no. 1 N. Djokovic after a great match. That will result in great loss of points for Nole, which could cost him lost of the 1st place in the ATP list by the end of season. The match started in accordance with expectations and Nole quickly made a break. He defended the advantage and easily won the first set.
When was expected that Djokovic will bring the match to its end he lost his service game in the tie-break of the second set, which automatically equalised the result. Tsitsipas again waited for a weak Djokovic’s service game in the decisive third set and reached the advantage of one break that was sufficient to win the match. It is interesting that Djokovic had just one break point on Tsitsipas service in the whole match, while the Greek had even seven break points.

Medvedev won all four previous head-to-head with Tsitispas. Accordingly, it is clear who is the favourite to win the match. There is no doubt that will not be an easy match but we believe that Medvedev is in better shape right now and we expect to see him in the final.
