ATP Montreal / Medvedev vs Nadal – D. Medvedev and R. Nadal will play for the title at the Masters in Montreal. Both of them played expectedly good so far and this is especially true for young Medvedev who has defeated his compatriot K. Khachanov in the semi-final. Nadal didn’t play his semi-final match as G. Monfils retired.
Match Medvedev vs Nadal begins 11.08.2019 at 22:00 CET
Regardless of the outcome of the final match we can say that Medvedev did a good job with reaching the final. His series of excellent results started at the tournament in Washington where the Russian lost in the final but had played very good before and he continues with good results in Montreal. As we have said in the introduction Medvedev defeated K. Khachanov 6-1, 7-6 for his second final in a row.
The result indicates that Khachanov didn’t start well and he “woke up” only in the second set, which was too late. Khachanov didn’t manage to defend his service games in the second set and Medvedev made two breaks but unlike the first set Khachanov had managed to annul the backlog. Khachanov had a nice advantage in the tie-break and could have returned in the match but he succumbed to the pressure. Medvedev was calmer and better played in key moments so he deservedly reached the final.
Nadal played in Montreal in accordance with expectations. True, he didn’t play spectacularly but there was no need for that given that most of opponents were weak challenge for World’s no. 2. The Spaniard arrived to Montreal with very good win/loss ratio 37-6, and on top of it he won two ATP titles at tournaments in Rome and Roland Garros where he defeated N. Djokovic and D. Thiem, respectively.
Nadal will be far more rested in the final than Medvedev as he didn’t have to play the semi-final match with Monfils. The French had to play both the quarter-final and semi-final matches in one day. He managed to win R. Bautista-Agut in the quarter-finals, but after that he decided to withdraw from the semi-finals. It is hard to tell how many time Monfils retired so far as he does that quite often. Regardless of that Nadal reached the final and he is a favourite to win the title.
Betting Pick: Medvedev vs Nadal
The two players have never met before but bookmakers give advantage to Nadal, which is understandable. Still, we cannot neglect Medvedev’s excellent results made in previous 15 days and we rightly expect to put up a solid resistance. We know that many players respect too much legends like Nadal is and don’t play against them with full throttle. We believe that Medvedev has enough self-confidence and will not be “afraid” of Nadal, so it is realistic to expect that the Russian won at least one set in the final match.
