Zverev vs. Struff / ATP Shanghai – Penultimate Master 1000 Series tournament of the year will be played in next seven days in Shanghai. Last year’s winner was A. Murray, who defeated R. Bautista-Agut in the final. Murray will not play at this year’s tournament in Shanghai and the first seed is at the same time World’s no. 1 R. Nadal. His main competitor, positioned at the opposite side of the draw, is R. Federer. The first analysis from this tournament will cover match between two German players, M. Zverev and J.L. Struff. Begins: 10.10.2017 – 06:00 CET
Zverev reached the 25th place in the ATP list around mid-year and that is the best rating in his career. The rating is a bit lower on the eve of tournament in Shanghai. Although this is the best season for M. Zverev so far he still hasn’t won a single ATP title. He was close to that objective at the tournament in Geneva where he played in the final but he lost to S. Wawrinka. Before Masters in Shanghai Zverev won and lost the same number of matches, by 27.
It could be seen already at the Australian Open that Zverev might have a good season as he eliminated A. Murray and reached the quarter-finals in which he lost to R. Federer. After that came a string of not so good results that lasted till abovementioned tournament in Geneva. Zverev played much better in Stuttgart where he played in the semi-final but lost after three tie-breaks to F. Lopez. At recently finished tournament in Metz the German reached the semi-final but he had to surrender the match to J. Gojowczyk due to injury.
This was one of better season for Struff too, as he reached in it the 44th place in the ATP rank list, which is the best rating in his career. On the eve of tournament in Shanghai the rating is lower for just four positions. In previous eight years of professional career Struff won no ATP titles. We must say that something like that was expected from him given that he was deemed as tennis prodigy who could reach the very top of ATP list.
In the course of this year the German won 23 and lost 24 matches, and two times was close to win his first ATP final. He missed the first chance at the tournament in Winston-Salem, where he reached the semi-final but lost to R. Bautista-Agut, while the second chance came at the tournament in St. Petersburg, where D. Dzumhur defeated him. Struff played the last match before going to Shaghai in Beijing and he lost in the first round right to his today’s opponent M. Zverev.
M. Zverev – J.L. Struff PICK
Both previous head-to-head between the two German players were full of suspense, but Zverev managed to win both of them. The first match took place in Munich 2015 (7-6, 3-6, 6-4) and the second in Beijing this season (5-7, 6-4, 6-4). The two players are familiar with each other and we should again see an uncertain match that should end with larger number of games that the bookies predict.
Pick: over 22 games
