Copil vs. Kovalik / ATP Sofia – First two semi-finalists at the tournament in Sofia are Romanian M. Copil and Slovak J. Kovalik. Given that neither of players was this close to an ATP final in their careers it is logical to expect an interesting and combative match, just like it was the case with their quarter-final matches. Begins: 10.02.2018 – 13:00 CET
Copil is Romanian player who reached the best rating in his career near the end of previous year when he was World’s no. 74. By the beginning of tournament in Sofia the rating went down a bit and Copil currently occupies the 93rd place in the ATP list. Just like most of players who compete at the tournament in Sofia, Copil also neither won an ATP title nor played in an ATP final. Before tournament in Sofia Copil won two and lost two matches this season.
He lost in first rounds of tournaments in Pune and the Australian Open, where L. Djere and G. Simon defeated him. The Romanian won two matches in the Davis Cup, where he played for Romanian national team against Luxembourg. Copil made a surprise in the quarter-final when he eliminated G. Muller 6-4, 6-4. Statistically, Copil was better player in that match although Muller had expectedly good first service and 1st serve points won.
Kovalik is another relatively young player from whom was expected a lot in battle for the very top of ATP rank list. However, by today’s day the Slovak hasn’t justified those expectations given that his best rating was 109th place in the ATP list held one year ago. To make matters worse, in previous year Kovalik spoiled his not so remarkable rating and he arrived to Sofia as World’s no. 187.
Just like his today’s opponent Kovalik also never played in an ATP final and by that he hasn’t won an ATP title. He mostly played this season in qualifications of various tournament and by now he hadn’t played in main draw of an ATP tournament. Based on that it is quite clear that reaching this semi-final is a great success for him. Kovalik defeated M. Baghdatis 7-6, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
M. Copil – J. Kovalik PICK
It is interesting situation that the two players fight for their first ATP final in their first ever head-to-head. Due to that we have no doubt that we will see maximal efforts from both players and trench battle for each point. Copil made a bit better results recently which was reflected on his better rating, and we believe that the Romanian will do better and reach the final.
