Dimitrov vs. Sock / ATP Finals London – Out of two semi-final matches from the ATP Finals in London we have chosen to analyse duel between Bulgarian G. Dimitrov and American J. Sock. Dimitrov qualified for the semi-finals after it won the first place in the Group A, while his opponent ended up as second in the Group B, right behind the first favourite of this tournament R. Federer. Begins: 18.11.2017 – 21:00 CET
After just two rounds of the group phase Dimitrov won the first place and qualified for the semi-finals. It came very handy that R. Nadal withdrew after the first round and Dimitrov had easier path than it should have been. However, we need to stress that Dimitrov played maximally seriously in first two rounds and he has fully deservedly reached the semi-finals.
In the last round the Bulgarian faced P. Carreno-Busta who replaced Nadal but the match didn’t have much impact since Dimitrov had already secured the first place after first two rounds. Dimitrov was supposed to fight a great battle for the first place with D. Goffin in the second round but the Belgian unexplainably badly played the match, and Dimitrov needed just 1 hour and 15 minutes to win by sound difference 6-0, 6-2.
After the Masters in Paris Sock has continued to play well in London where after three rounds he ends at the second place in the Group B, right behind R. Federer and ahead of A. Zverev and M. Cilic. Very good Sock suffered the only defeat in the first round by Federer, which was realistic to expect. The American played the decisive match for reaching the semi-finals against German A. Zverev who was regarded as a favourite to win the match.
We expected a tight match which was exactly what happened given that all three sets were played but the second expectation didn’t materialise as Zverev underperformed in the third, decisive set when he lost his service games even three times. Sock used his nervousness and made a break in the 10th game of third set. That meant his automatic victory worth of semi-finals.
G. Dimitrov – J. Sock PICK
Out of four head-to-head played before Sock won three and Dimitrov just one. The two of them met once this season at the Masters in Indian Wells, and Sock won 3-6, 6-3, 7-6. Due to importance of this match we expect result similar to one from Indian Wells, and consequently we would play on larger number of games than offered.
Pick: over 21.5 games
