Fenerbahce vs. Banvit / Turkish Super Cup – Reigning champion Fenerbahce and the Cup winner Banvit will play 33rd Turkish Super Cup in the county’s capital Ankara, where league and Cup winners traditionally meet before the season kicks off. Fenerbahce defends the title in this competition since it won the Super Cup last year, while Banvit will play in the Super Cup for the first time in history. The draw decided that the two teams meet in the first round of Turkish Super Lig which starts on 7th October in Fenerbache’s arena. Begins: 04.10.2017 – 18:00 CET
Fenerbahce won all available titles in Turkey last year except the Turkish Cup, which Banvit won. They opened last season with triumph right in the Turkish Super Cup where they defeated Anadolu Efes, to which they lost in the quarter-final of Turkish Cup on 15th February. That was the last Fenerbahce’s defeat in Turkey last season. After that this team won 12 matches in a row in the regular season. It ended the regular season with win/loss ratio of 28-2 and it occupied the first place when the play-off started.
In the play-off, just like in the EuroLeauge, in which they lost to Real Madrid the last official match on 31st March last season, Fenerbahce lost no matches and won the title. Fenerbahce ended the season with 22 consecutive victories in both competitions. Udoh and Bogdanovic left the team and instead they brought Thompson and Guler, as well as Wanamaker from Darussafaka, Guduric from Crvena Zvezda and Melli from Bamberg.
Probable lineups Fenerbahce: Dixon, Guler, Datome, Vesely, Thompson
Last year Banvit ended the regular season as fifth in the table and was eliminated later on by Darussafaka in the quarter-final by 2-0, however last season was the most successful in Banvit history due to winning the Turkish Cup. It was the first title won in Turkey. They defeated Efes in the final, which had eliminated Fenerbahce before that. Before the final match Banvit eliminated Besiktas and Galatasaray. In FIBA Champions League, after elimination of Monaco (83-73) in the semi-final Banvit played in the final tournament and lost to the home team Tenerife 59-63.
Good results were cause for departure of important players, first of all Theodore, who left for Milano, while young Turkish player Korkmaz ended up in the NBA. The two were followed by Lithuanian Orelik, Slovenian Muric, American Chappell, etc. Out of first five only centre Vidmar left. However, coach Filipovski has again assembled a good team, in which he has six foreign players so he doesn’t have to think whom he will leave on the bench.
Probable lineups Banvit: Taylor, Odum, Thomas, Kulig, Vidmar
