Djokovic vs Tsitsipas / ATP Madrid – Audience in Madrid won’t see duel between World’s no. 1 and 2. Djokovic did his part of the job and he reached the final after defeating very good D. Thiem in the semi-finals, but R. Nadal underperformed and he failed to win young Greek S. Tsitsipas.
Djokovic vs Tsitsipas begins 12.05.2019 at 18:30 CET
Djokovic had expectedly difficult task in the semi-final to break resistance of D. Thiem. The Austrian is in very good shape and he came to Madrid after winning the title in Barcelona. The match lasted almost two and half hours and the result read at the end 7-6, 7-6 for Djokovic. Thiem made break in the third game of the first set, but Djokovic quickly equalised and the winner of the first set had to determine in the tie-break.
We saw more breaks in the second set. Thiem was again the first to make break but Nole quickly annulled his advantage with re-break. After that the situation turned up-side down and the Austrian had to catch up so we again saw the 13th game. Djokovic was far more focused and calm in key moments of the last game and he lost just one point when he served. Statistic from both sets is on Djokovic’s side who saved 7 out of 10 break points. On the other hand, Thiem faced just three break-points in his service games, but he didn’t save any of them.
Tsitsipas came to Madrid after winning the title at the tournament in Estoril, where he defeated P. Cuevas in the final. That put him at the 9th place in the ATP list, which is weaker from his best rating for just one place. Besides ATP Estoril, Tsitsipas won one more title this season, which he did in Marseille where he defeated M. Kukushkin in the final.
We could say that the Greek surprised Nadal in the semi-finals with strong resistance, given that the Spaniard won all their previous head-to-head without much trouble. Nadal served significantly below expected level in the first and third set, which is one of main reasons why Tsitsipas so easily come in situation to make break. The Greek should be congratulated for what he has showed throughout the tournament as he now has chance to win his first Masters title, but to do so he firstly need to defeat World’s no. 1 player.
Djokovic vs Tsitsipas PICK
Djokovic and Tsitsipas had played one match before and the Greek won. They met at the Masters in Toronto last season and Tsitispas won 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. Despite that Djokovic is a favourite to win the final. Still, Nadal was regarded as an even bigger favourite but he lost in the semi-finals. Perhaps it is too much to expect from Tsitsipas to make another great surprise but the Greek is definitely capable to put up a good resistance which should result with larger number of games.
