ATP Shanghai / Djokovic vs Shapovalov – We will start analysing the second round of the Masters in Shanghai with match between the title defender N. Djokovic and Canadian D. Shapovalov. Djokovic had defeated B. Coric in the last year’s final and will start the title defence with a fairly serious opponent, which the young Canadian definitely is.
Match Djokovic vs Shapovalov begins 09.10.2019 at 06:00 CET
Djokovic came to Shaghai in a fairly good shape which he showed at recently finished tournament in Tokyo where he won the fourth title this season. Djokovic didn’t have a difficult task in the final of tournament in Tokyo given that the opponent was this season mediocre J. Millman. In that way Nole has increased the point advantage over Nadal but the Spaniard is still close enough and can take over the leading position by the end of season.
First eight seeds were free in the first round and Djokovic automatically qualified for the second round, where he came literally right from Tokyo. We should remind that Nole won two Grand Slams this season; the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and he also won the Masters in Madrid where he defeated S. Tsitsipas in the final.
Shapovalov was recently subject of one of ours analyses and we had said then that he is very good young player who made several noteworthy results this season that helped him to improve his ATP rating. In April 2019 Shapovalov was World’s no. 20, and that was the best rating in his three-year long professional career.
Shapovalov hasn’t managed yet to win an ATP title or to play in an ATP final. Part of the problem is that the Canadian still oscillates a lot and right that lack of continuity prevents him to make a larger progress and fight for the title. He made the best result so far at the Masters in Miami where he reached the semi-finals when he lost to R. Federer. Shapovalov also reached the semi-finals at recently finished tournament in Changdu and he lost then to P. Carreno-Busta.
Betting Pick: Djokovic vs Shapovalov
Djokovic had relatively easy won two previous matches with Shapovalov. However, the Canadian has made a significant progress since then and Nole is tired after winning the title in Tokyo. There is no doubt that Djovovic is an absolute favourite to win, however Shapovalov has strong service that could help him to put up a stiffer resistance to a bit tired Djokovic, which is why we have opted to play on counter-handicap in number of won games.
Pick: Shapovalov +5.5 games
