D. Goffin vs G. Dimitrov 15.08.2017 – ATP Finals London

Goffin vs. Dimitrov / ATP Finals London – After first round in the Group A winners were D. Goffin and G. Dimitrov. The Belgian defeated World’s no. 1 R. Nadal, while Dimitorov outplayed Austrian D. Thiem after three interesting sets. One of these two players will be on verge to reach the semi-finals after their head-to-head. Begins: 15.11.2017 – 15:00 CET

D. Goffin

This is the best season for Goffin in his eight years of professional career. It means that he reached the 8th place in the ATP list this year, which is his best rating and on top of it he won two titles out of four in total. Very good win/loss ratio 54-22 complements the two titles that Goffin won at tournaments in Shenzhen and Tokyo, where he defeated in finals A. Dolgopolov and A. Mannarin, respectively.

Goffin had a difficult task in the first round to defeat World’s no. 1 but he succeeded. First two sets were decided after tie-breaks, although we had seen number of good points in both sets and by several breaks on both sides. In the third, decisive set Nadal lost first two service games and that was hard to compensate. Goffin won the third set and checked very important victory in the march toward the semi-finals. We need to stress that Nadal came injured to London and his appearance was questionable from the beginning but that doesn’t downplay Goffin’s achievement.

G. Dimitrov

We have mentioned most of important results that Dimitrov made this season when we analysed the first round of this tournament when the Bulgarian faced D. Thiem. Now, we will say a bit more about what has happened on the courts and important statistical parameters. Dimitrov was regarded as a favourite to win the match and he indeed opened it in that way as he won the first set in 39 minutes. It seemed in those moments that the Bulgarian could easily win the second set but that is not what happened.

We didn’t see a single break chance all the way till the 12th game when Dimitrov served for tie-break. The Bulgarian won no points in that game and Thiem equalised the result 1-1 in sets. We had seen much more turnovers in the last, third set when Dimitrov again dominates and manages to win the key break near the end of set, which was worth the victory. It is interesting that Thiem served rather poorly, 1st serve 47%, but 1st serve points won were at solid 80%.

D. Goffin – G. Dimitrov PICK

The two players had faced each other four times and Dimitrov won three matches, while Goffin won just one. Goffin won their last head-to-head that was played in Rotterdam 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Besides the match in Rotterdam they played two more matches this year; at the Australian Open 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and tournament in Sofia 7-5, 6-4 where Dimitrov had an upper hand. Today’s match, like the whole tournament, is very specific as the winner qualifies for the semi-finals of one of major ATP tournaments, which is why we expect a great battle and by that bigger number of games than offered.
