Chardy vs Cilic 25.11.2018 – Davis Cup

Chardy vs Cilic / Davis Cup – We are going to find out who will be the last winner of the Davis Cup in this format after the third day when J. Chardy and M. Cilic might play the decisive match. French players have disappointed their fans after Day 1 since they lost both matches but P. Herbert and N. Mahut have raised their hopes once again as they won M. Pavic and I. Dodig in doubles.

Chardy vs Cilic begins 25.11.2018 at 14:00 CET

J. Chardy

Chardy was totally outplayed in the first match of the Davci Cup final by B. Coric. It is true that the Croatian was a favourite to win the match but we expected more from Chardy. All good what he did was 14 aces but he also made five double faults. The rest of statistic was on Coric side, who played a perfect match. From the beginning Chardy was trailing behind as he lost two service games in a row in the first set.

The French had managed to establish a balance in the second set when he had two break points that he failed to materialise. He was duly punished for missed chance near the end of the second set and Coric soon had advantage of 2-0 in sets. The third set was carbon copy of the second. Chardy again lost his service game and Coric routinely maintains the advantage till the end. Accordingly, we haven’t seen much from Chardy in the first match and we believe that he cannot play any worse.

M. Cilic

Just as Coric justified role of a favourite in the first match Cilic did the same in match with Tsonga. The French simply hadn’t have chance to outplay very good Cilic, who played one of better matches this season. In this duel we could see how much the first service means for Cilic, as his 1st serve points won was at 91%. Tsonga is also a good server but he served far below good in this match.

After Tsonga’s defeat many had asked why head coach of the French team hasn’t sent L. Pouille on the court as we all know that Tsonga missed almost the entire season due to injury. According to what we have seen in the match Pouille could hardly do any better as Cilic simply played fantastically. Out of the statistic we should single out fact that Cilic had 12 aces and 38 directly won points.

Chardy vs Cilic PICK

Out of their five head-to-head Cilic won three and Chardy won remaining two. Due to lead of the Croatian team of 2-1 pressure on the French player is much higher. The French have showed nothing on the first day and their public expect to finally play well. Cilic is again a favourite to win as he is the best ranked player of this final, and he could make a mark in history as player who brought the last Davis Cup to his team played in this format. Anyway, we expect an interesting match in which Chardy should play much better than he did in the first round and consequently we would play on a bit larger number of games.
