Australia vs Honduras 15.11.2017 – World Cup Qualification

Australia vs. Honduras / World Cup Qualification – Just like vast majority of 1st play-off matches the one between Honduras and Australian didn’t bring spectacular football given that neither of teams wanted to lose. Since match in San Pedro ended as goalless draw the match in Sydney will decide who goes to Russia. Both teams have behind themselves longer unbeaten streaks. Begins: 15.11.2017 – 10:00 CET

Australia

That was third consecutive match for Australia that had no winner after regular 90 minutes, given that previous one with Syria, played at home was won only after extra time. Before that the Australians drew in Syria 1-1 and then they played the same result in Australia in regular time. Cahill goal scored in 109 minute decided who goes to the play off.

Since he was scorer of the only goal for Australian in regular time everyone expected that coach Postecoglu will give him chance to play from the first minute against Honduras but that didn’t happen, probably due to tactical reasons. Now, in the 2nd leg Postecoglu has no excuse to not put Cahill in the starting line-up, just like Rogic who came off the bench in San Pedro. Stopper Milligan will probable get a place in the starting 11, just like winger Leckie, as their suspensions expired in the meantime.

Probable lineups Australia: Ryan – Wright, Milligan, Sainsbury – Leckie, Luongo, Jedinak, Mooy, Behich – Rogic – Cahill

Honduras

Honduras players had quite certainly dreamed about at least minimal victory in the play-off 1st leg over Australia since they played at home but they are probably not too sad with 0-0 from that match given that they haven’t conceded a goal. If they score in Australia at least one goal it would wide open door of the World Cup in Russia, but it is at the same time hard to expect that something will change in their tactical setup compared to the first match in San Pedro.

Especially as it is expected that Australia, being the host, will play more offensively while Honduras will probably wait for its chance through fast counter attacks and set pieces. Unlike the match in San Pedro this time Honduras will be stronger for stopper M. Figuerou and winger Elis, as their suspension expired in the meantime. The rest of the team will probably stay the same, especially as out of action due to injuries are defender Najar and midfielder Espinoza.

Probable lineups Honduras: Escober – Beckeles, H. Figueroa, M. Figueroa, Izaguirre – Claros, Mejia – Elis, Lopez, Quioto – Lozano

We have seen in this play-off a large number of hard and inefficient matches and it is hard to expect something different from the 2nd leg between Australia and Honduras, which is we would play here on smaller number of goals.
