AS Roma vs FC Porto / Champions League – This is perhaps not so attractive match of the Champions League round of 16 but it could be very interesting and uncertain. Roma doesn’t play well in the Italian Seria A where it occupies mere 6th place, while it won the second place in the group phase of the Champions League. Porto is leading team in the Portuguese championship, however, it lost steam recently and for example didn’t win in two previous rounds. Porto had a bit easier group in the group phase of the Champions League and it ended up at the first position. Porto played in Rome the last time in 2016 and then it won by 3-0.
AS Roma vs FC Porto begins 12.02.2019 at 21:00 CET
Roma is experiencing turbulent season but it is still in the race for new season in the Champions League in which it can still reach at least the quarter-finals if it manages to eliminate Porto. They were eliminated from the Coppa Italia after true debacle against Fiorentina 7-1 away. It was a painful defeat before which they dropped lead of 3-0 against Atalanta in Bergamo. After Florence they faced Milan at home and drew 1-1.
Roma received goals way too easily but on Friday when they met next-to-last Chievo they finally consolidated their defence and won by 3-0. After only 20 minutes of the match Roma had lead of 2-0 and was evident that will win, although everyone in the team was caution after unpleasant experience in Bergamo. Roma has a fair deal of problems with injuries and out of action are goalkeeper Olsen, stopper Manolas, forwards Perotti and Under, while Schick is questionable for this match.
Probable lineups AS Roma: Mirante – Karsdorp, Marcano, Fazio, Kolarov – Cristante, N'Zonzi, Zaniolo – Kluivert, Dzeko, El Shaarawy
Porto is undergoing the biggest crisis since the beginning of season and it can be said that drop of performances came at a wrong time. They did a routine job in the group phase of the Champions League where they after initial draw won five next matches and effortlessly win the first place in the group. That has brought them a bit easier rival in the round of 16. In the Portuguese Liga NOS Porto occupies the first place for a very long time, where it lost the last time at the beginning of October 2018 to it biggest rival Benfica in Lisbon. Porto’s problem is that it only drew in two previous rounds with teams that are objectively much weaker.
They firstly drew away with Guimaraes 0-0 and if Porto fails to win the title this team is going to be the main culprit as they won Porto at its stadium 3-2 in the first part of season. In the previous round Porto drew away with Moreirense 1-1 although it was on verge of defeat but thanks to Herrera they equalised in the stoppage time. Right now Porto has one point more than Benfica and that raises pressure on them, together with fact that that lost the final of the League Cup to Sporting. Porto has serious problem with attacking part of the team where Aboubakar and Marega are out of action, just like J. Corona who is suspended.
Probable lineups FC Porto: Casillas – Militao, Felipe, Pepe, A. Telles – Herrea, D. Pereira, O. Torres – Brahimi, Otavio, T. Soares
AS Roma vs FC Porto PICK
Roma will enjoy the home-field advantage but that is perhaps the only advantage it will have. Roma has a fair deal of problems, especially with defence, while Porto is always dangerous in attack although its several important forwards are missing. Still, it is realistic to expect that both teams score.
