R. Bautista-Agut vs D. Medvedev 08.01.2017 – ATP Chennai

Bautista-Agut vs. Medvedev / ATP Chennai – Spaniard R. Bautista-Agut and Russian D. Medvedev have reached the final of tournament in Chennai. Bautista-Agut is expectedly one of finalists, given that he is the second seed, while no one expected to see Medvedev this far, as first seed M. Cilic was expected in the final from that side of the draw. Begins: 08.01.2017 – 12:30 CET

R. Bautista-Agut

Great season is behind Bautista-Agut in which he played the best so far. Around middle of October he was 13th ranked player in the world, which was his best rating ever. By the beginning of new season his rating went down for one place, but that doesn’t ruin very good impression that the Spaniard made in previous season. Besides the rating, Bautista-Agut will remember previous season by two titles, won at tournaments in Auckland and Sofia, where he defeated in finals J. Sock and V. Troicki, respectively.

Number of won title could have been bigger if Bautista-Agut was more focused and had a bit more luck at tournaments in Winston-Salem and Sahghai, where was finalist but was defeated by P Carreno-Busta and A. Murray. Worth mentioning is result made at tournament in St. Petersburg, where he reached the semi-final in which was expectedly defeated by favoured S. Wawrinka. When we are talking about semi-final of this tournament in Chennai we can say that the Spaniard had fully outplayed French B. Paire 6-4, 6-3. The result could be higher given that Bautista-Agut had advantage of 4-0 in games in the second set.

D. Medvedev

Twenty one-year old Russian D. Medvedev is also one of players who made their best rating in previous season, and in his case that was 98 position in the ATP rank list. In previous two years of professional career Medvedev didn’t win a single ATP title and in fact this is his first final. We can assume this will be a special experience for him and he will remember it for a long time even if he doesn’t win the title.

Regarding his result from previous season, the young Russian had mostly played at Challengers, while his final reach at ATP Tour was second round. In such circumstance he won five matches and lost the same number of them. We need to mention just one match from 500 Series tournament played in Hamburg where Medvedev went thought the qualifications and reached the second round when he lost to D. Gimeno-Traver after three uncertain set. In the semi-final of this tournament he played against D. Sela and was on verge of defeat, but after he saved match point on the Israeli’s service he managed to make a full turn over and win his first ATP final.

R. Bautista-Agut – D. Medvedev PICK

It happened that the two players will meet for the first time in final of the ATP tournament. Their results and positions in the ATP list clearly suggest that the Spaniard is favourite in this final, but there is no doubt that the Russian will do all he can in order to finish his first ever final with a trophy in his hands. Bautista-Agut is far better player at the moment, and on top of it is in very good shape. We believe that he will not allow surprises, which is why we would play on his victory with minor handicap in number of won games.
