Poland vs. Slovenia / International – Both teams are in good mood ahead of this friendly in Wroclaw, given that three days ago they won their respective qualifying matches for the World Cup 2018 in Russia. Poland triumphed in Romania by even 3-0, while Slovenia dispatches outsider Malta by 1-0. In that way both teams continue to be undefeated in this qualification, although the Poles are leaders in the Group E having 10 points, while the Slovenians are currently second in their group with eight points and have just two points fewer than leading England. The two teams met the last time in qualifications for the World Cup 2010 and then Slovenia won at home by even 3-0, while the match in Poland ended as draw 1-1. Begins: 14.11.2016 – 20:45 CET
In the meantime the Poles have progressed far more and unlike the Slovenians they participated at this year’s Euro in France, where they reached the quarter-finals but were stopped then by later winner of the championship, Portugal. In accordance to that expectations in Poland are high about current qualification for the World Cup, especially as the final will take place in neighbouring Russia, and the Poles could enjoy great support from the stands.
However, not all went well for them at the beginning as they won just one point in the first round when they faced Kazakhstan away. In that match the Poles lost lead of 2-0 but then in next three matches they played far more focused and firstly won at home Denmark 3-2 and Armenia 2-1, while last Friday they won in Romania by high 3-0. That automatically propelled them at the first place in the Group E, so coach Nawalka can try now new variants in this friendly against Slovenia, which means that we should see on the pitch players who mostly watched from the bench the match against Romania.
Probable lineups Poland: Szczesny – Bereszynski, Lewczuk, Sadlok, Jedrzejczyk – Wszolek, Jodlowiec, Maczynski, Peszko – Teodorczyk, Wilczek
We have said about Slovenia in the introduction that three days ago they won Malta in qualifications for the World Cup in Russia, which granted them three new points, but we need to add that coach Katanec players had struggled in the match as they scored the winning goal only around middle of second halftime. However, for them it is the most important to keep close to leading Enlish as after four rounds they have just two points fewer, while on the other hand third-positioned Slovaks currently have just two points than the Slovenians.
The Slovenians won their second qualifier right against the Slovaks, when they won at home 1-0, while in two remaining matches they drew with Lithuania away 2-2 and drew with favoured England at home. Regarding the team that will face Poland, we believe that Katanec will rest most of players who faced Malta, which is on the other hand great chance for new players to prove themselves ahead of coming qualifiers.
Probable lineups Slovenia: Belec – Jovic, Mevlja, Mlinar, Sikošek – Zajc, Pihler – Omladic, Kronaveter, Crnic – Sporar
