W. J. Tsonga is on 10th place in the ATP rankings. He has won ten titles so far and one last season at the tournament in Marseille when he defeated Berdych in the final. Last year’s Australian Open ended for him in the quarter-finals where was defeated right by Federer. After that he played weakly at two tournaments, in Rotterdam and Dubai, where was eliminated in the first round by Sijsling and Llodra, respectively. He did somewhat better in Indian Wells, where he played in another quarter-finals but that time Djokovic was better, and in Miami was eliminated by Cilic in the fourth round.
He made a good result in Monte Carlo qualifying for the semi-finals, where Nadal defeated him, and in Madrid was stopped in the quarter-finals by Wawrinka. Rome was disappointing as he was eliminated in the second round by Janovicz with a convincing 2-0, while at the Roland Garros he played in the semi-finals where was stopped by Ferrer. Because of injury he missed the US Open while in Shanghai had played in the semi-finals and lost to Djokovic.
R. Federer is currently sixth player in the ATP rankings and has won 77 titles in his career, of which one of last season at a tournament in Halle where he defeated Youzhny in the final. The season started for him in Brisbane, where he played in the final and lost to Hewitt. At last year’s Australian Open he lost to Murray in the semi-finals, and in Rotterdam as the defending champion lost in the quarter-finals to Benneteau 2-0. In Dubai Berdych stopped him in the semi-finals by 2-1 in sets, while in Indian Wells he lost to Nadal in the quarter-finals.
Another disappointing result took place in Madrid where he, as the defending champion, was stopped in the third round by Nishikori 2-1, while in Rome he played against Nadal in the final and lost. The Roland Garros ended for him in the quarter-finals with defeat by Tsonga 3-0, and he suffered a surprising defeat in the second round of Wimbledon by Stakhovsky 3-1. The tournament in Hamburg brought him another surprising defeat in the semi-finals by then 114th player in the world, F. Delbonis 6-7, 6-7 in sets, and at the US Open he merely reached the fourth round when was defeated by Robredo .
J.W. Tsonga – R. Federer Pick
Tsonga and Federer had played 13 matches before this one and the Swiss won nine of them. Last season had played in the quarter-final of the Australian Open and Federer won after five sets, while Tsonga retaliated at Roland Garros with a convincing victory of 3-0. Federer was fairly bleak last season, and he won just one title and suffered several unexpected defeats, but Tsonga was no better. The Swiss no longer plays at the top level, but we consider him as a favourite against Tsonga, as he is stronger on the psychological level than the French, and it could change the balance decisively in this match.
