Both players have defeated their opponents in the first round without dropping a set; Verdasco outplayed V. Pospisil, while Goffin won R. Haas. Begins: 04.01.2017 – 12:00 CET

F. Verdasco

Verdasco played averagely in previous season and his rating fluctuated between 45th and 65th positions in the ATP rank list. However, compared to one season before he made a small progress and right now he occupies 42nd place and has seven titles in total, out of which one comes from last season when he won tournament in Bucharest. Besides Bucharest, Verdasco played in one more final match, the one in Bastaad, but he lost that one to his compatriot A. Ramos.

The Spaniard usually ended his endeavours in first two rounds of tournaments where he played. Some of his better results are third round of Masters in Indian Wells and Miami, where he lost to R. Nadal and H. Zaballos, respectively. Verdasco also couldn’t pass the third round at Roland Garros, where he was defeated by K. Nishikori. Last year’s tournament in Doha ended again in the second round after defeat by N. Djokovic.

D. Goffin

Goffin is one of younger players who should demonstrate this season that he is ready to face the best ones. Good intro for that should be previous season in which the Belgian played well and reached his best rating in career, which is 11th position in the ATP rank list. Number of just two titles is too small for such talented player, and Goffin should win several more this season, at least at ATP 250 series tournaments.

Goffin was close to win his third title in career near end of previous season in Tokyo, where he played in the final but he lost to N. Kyrgios after three sets. Of course, we must mention excellent performances that he demonstrated at Masters in Indian Wells and Miami, where he reached semi-finals when was defeated by M. Raonic and N. Djokovic, respectively. The Belgian started previous season at tournament in Brisbane where L. Pouille defeated him in the second round.

F. Verdasco – D. Goffin PICK

Each player won two matches out of four previous head-to-head. They met the last time previous season at the Masters in Monte Carlo, when Goffin won 7-2, 2-6, 7-6.
