Thiem vs. G. Elias / ATP Sydney – The first analysis of the second round of the tournament in Sydney belongs to the match between Austrian D. Thiem and the Portuguese G. Elias. Elias has reached this stage of the competition through qualifiers, and he was better than T.Montierao in the first round, while Thiem as the first holder automatically passed in the second round. Begins: 11.01.2017. – 01:00 CET

D. Thiem

Thiem is with his 23 years of age the most promising young tennis player at his moment. This is confirmed by his breakthrough at the 7th position of the ATP rankings which earned him his premiere performance at the final tournament in London. In addition, this Austrian has in the past year won four out of seven titles, and he achieved a positive win-loss ratio, which is (58:24). Number of titles could be even higher if he played a little better in the finals of the tournaments in Munich and Metz, where he lost to P. Kohlschreiber and L. Pouille.

One of his most prominent appearance was at Roland Garros, where he reached the semi-finals but was stopped by N. Djokovic and definitely worth mentioning are placements in the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati and the fourth round of the US Open, where M. Raonic and J.M. Del Potro were better than him. This season Thiem performed at Brisbane, where he in the framework of the second round defeated S. Groth, while he in the quarterfinals lost to G.Dimitrov.

G. Elias

Elias is one of the many players who in the previous season reached the best rating of his career, which is in his case  the 57th position in the ATP rankings. By the beginning of the season that rating was significantly ruined, and so before the tournament in Sydney, this Portuguese occupies 81st place. In the previous nine years of professional tennis, Elias has  failed to win a single ATP title, and he also have not participated in any of the in the finals.

His first performance of the season was at the tournament in Chennai, where he in the first round lost to J. Kovalik, the 117th player in the world. When it comes to the results from last season, it is important to mention that this Portuguese generally performed in the Challengers, and when it comes to the ATP Tour, he managed to record 13 wins with 14 defeats. His most remarkable performance this year were at the tournament in Umag and Bastad, where he played the semi-finals but lost to F. Fognini and F. Verdasco.

D. Thiem vs. G. Elias PICK

Both previously played matches between these two players, Thiem has managed to resolve in his favour. Their first match was played last year in Buenos Aires (3:6 7:6 6:3), and the second one in Davis Cup (3:6 7:5 6:3 1:6 7:6). Although it is a great difference in the quality of these two players, we see that Thiem did not have an easy job in the previous two games. This is the start of the season and tennis players need to find the right rhythm but we believe that in accordance with these results, Elias will provide solid resistance, which is why we expect over 20 games in this match.
