Bayern Munich vs. Atletico Madrid / Champions League – The two teams have expectedly qualified for the round of 16, but it is surprising that Bayern, for the first time after six season, will go to the knockout phase as second positioned team in the group due to fact that Atletico is way too ahead of them to catch with them. That hadn’t been expected, while culprit why this match bears no significance is Rostov, which surprised the German champion in previous round and defeated them. It is perhaps more accurate to say that Bayern’s players are the guilty one but even if they won they would have to win this match with two-goal difference, as Atletico defeated them in Madrid by 1-0. The Spanish team is the only one left with perfect score in the Champions League. In their respective national championships both teams have problems; Bayern is second in the Bundesliga standings, which is bad result for them, while Atletico is just fourth in La Liga. Last season Bayern had defeated Atletico at home by insufficient 2-1 in the semi-final of Champions League. Begins: 06.12.2016 – 20:45 CET
Bayern is such club that second position in any competition equals failure. Given they are currently second both in the championship and their Group D of the Champions League it can be said that the season is not good. They lost matches they weren’t supposed to lose, which their rivals skilfully use. After losing in Madrid to Atletico 1-0 the plan was to stay close and wait for their mistake, where the final decision who will end up as the first in group will be brought in this match. Instead, the Bavarians blundered in previous round in Rostov on Don and given that Atletico hasn’t made a mistake everything is decided due to six-point difference between them.
In the German championship Bayern’s plans were not spoiled by teams they feared of, like two Borussias or Bayer Leverkusen, but Leipzig that defies them from the first place in the standings. Hertha, Hoffenheim and Entracht are close too. Bayern played two bad matches in the championship before the disappointment in Rostov, but after that they won two times; against Mainz last weekend but it should be said that they received a goal in both those victories which is now a series of eight matches in a row in which they conceded a goal. Coach Ancelotti has announced a fairly changed team for this match, due to lack of imperative and/or appeal.
Probable lineups Bayern Munich: Neuer – Rafinha, J. Boateng, Badstuber, J. Bernat – Vidal, Xabi Alonso, R. Sanches – Robben, T. Muller, D.Costa
Atletico made a perfect score in the group phase, which is very commendable as they are the only team with all five victories. Probably they have desire to win the sixth one, despite how difficult it is, but they would probably want to transfer a point or two from the Champions League to La Liga given they suffered several unexpected defeats in it. In fact, the situation is bad enough so we can say they were already eliminated from the race for the title, as they have nine points fewer than city rival Real, which easily defeated them at Vicente Calderon recently.
Before that Atletico lost to Real Sociedad away, while after victory in Pamplona they merely drew 0-0 in previous round with Espanyol at home. They lost three times and each time they didn’t score a goal, while out of four draws, two were goalless. Despite desire to win for the sixth time, it would be reasonable that coach Simeone mix the team in which there are no injured Cerci and A. Fernandez, while Filipe Luis and Tiago will not even travel to Munich. It is expected that Simeone will give chance to Vrsaljko, Savic, Lucas, Gaita, Saul Niguez and Corre, and even perhaps to goalkeeper Moya.
Probable lineups Atletico Madrid: Moya – Vrsaljko, Savic, Gimenez, Lucas – Saul Niguez, Gabi, Gaitan, Carrasco – Correa, Gameiro
Bayern Munich – Atletico Madrid PICK
No team has any imperative, and Bayern’s motivation could be to improve the impression with a victory, while Atletico perhaps wants to end the group phase with maximal six victories. Since both teams will be significantly changed, it can easily happen that both of them score at least one goal.
Pick: both teams score
